Memes don’t happen on purpose. “Gratuitous Picture of $PERSON with $OBJECT $DAY” is a thing, but it’s not really a meme. Memes happen spontaneously, without intent or purpose, first through repetition and sharing. Then through a creative evolution they become unique iterations of a core idea. So when I posted my piece of “fan mail” earlier, I had no idea that “I hope your not mad” would take on a life of its own today (see here, here, here, etc.). That’s why memes can be fun. Until they get annoying. Which is usually very quickly. But my point remains valid. Also, Knowlton wins the meme for this picture. (via toldorknown)
